Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about therapy and counseling.

How long does therapy last?

The number of sessions for couples counseling or individual therapy varies by person and situation. My goal is to get you where you want to be as quickly as possible. Once you no longer need my services, I terminate regular sessions and schedule maintenance sessions as needed. I believe caring for yourself, and your relationship is an ongoing process, and you will know when it needs attention.

What can I expect during our sessions?

We will work together to gain insight into what brought you to therapy and explore how these issues are impacting your life. We will develop an action plan and work collaboratively to create desired change. You will learn new skills and have the opportunity to practice them in session and at home.  Psychoeducation, tools, and coaching will be provided throughout therapy.

Do you take insurance?

The Downtown Therapist is a private practice and does not accept insurance.  However, HSA credit cards are accepted, and a Superbill is provided that can be submitted to insurance companies for reimbursement. It is the client's responsibility to verify eligibility for reimbursement from the insurance company prior to service.  Please keep in mind that counseling is an investment in yourself, your relationship with others, and your overall wellbeing. It is important to find a therapist you like and who will help create the change you are longing for.

What if I do not like my therapist?

Don't give up on therapy! We all have unique personalities and prefer different methods and styles. Let your therapist know if something isn't working for you. If it still doesn't feel like the right fit, ask for referrals and/or interview other therapists. Keep in mind, sometimes leaning into discomfort creates the most change! Also, you can take away what works and leave the rest!
